Day 45 - Messing Up
MY JOURNEY

Sometimes You Do Things...
That just aren't the smartest.
Today is one of those days.
After grabbing some groceries for the kitchenette, eating some eggs and toast, I head down to the hotel weight room.
For a hotel it's really not bad. Dumbbells up to 50s, cardio equipment, and a few cable weight stacks.
Everything I need to get some chest and tri work in today.
I hit it for about 45 minutes, exhausting my pecs and burning out my triceps.
This was fine. Nothing wrong with the work. But I should have ended my day there.
A flight up where my hydration and nutrition wasn't on point should have been my first indication to limit my workload.
Instead, I decided that I should go hit the "scheduled" run.
I go change into my Brooks and hit the road outside the hotel.
I don't feel great, but who does all the time?
There is a large paved drive that slopes up towards the sky, the incline much steeper than anything I'm ready for.
But there in lies the challenge.
I take a quick lap around an industrial complex across the road from it before heading up the hill.
My heart rate is climbing as I ascend. My first run sees an HR of 153.
I jog slowly back down to recover my heart rate, then take a lap around the industrial complex again.
This is when I feel the right calf tightness beginning.
"Don't be soft" I tell myself. I am 12 minutes in to a 35 minute run.
The next lap goes much the same, my pace slowing a bit, my calf constricting more.
Finally, I get to the last lap.
My calf feels rough, my gait starting to become compromised.
The last climb up the hill is excruciatingly slow, and my descent is much the same.
I begin walking back to the hotel, done with my session.
My calf feels tough. I take a step on an uneven surface and that's when I feel it grab.
Cramp? Strain? I don't know but it sure isn't letting me walk correctly at this point.
I limp into the hotel then limp around the rest of the day.
We have reached the first set back in this journey...
